ESPN ranked 4 Chelsea flops among top-10 worst Premier League transfers

ESPN has presented a list of 50 worst transfers in the Premier League era, and Chelsea are featuring heavily as they are represented by 4 flops in the top 10 of these rankings.

Danny Drinkwater's presence in the list is understandable, and his second place is only fair, too: the midfielder was signed for £34.1m 3 years ago and was given £100,000-per-week wages. He only featured in one season for the Blues and then struggled to impress every manager he worked with, including Frank Lampard.

No.5 in the list is Adrian Mutu, a Romanian forward who spell at Stamford Bridge was abruptly ended after he tested positive for cocaine usage. He was suspended for 7 months and released by Chelsea who paid £17.1m for him back in 2003.

Another former Chelsea forward is 7th: Andriy Shevchenko was Roman Abramovich's top priority ever since the Russian billionaire bought the club. In 2006, he splurged £39.5m for the Ukrainian, but the output was miserable: just 9 goals in 48 Premier League games.

The remaining ex-Blue on the list is the least recognizable, but Winston Bogarde's presence there is legitimate: from 2000 to 2004, he earned £40,000-per-week despite only making 9 appearances for the Blues during that time. Even though he came on a free transfer, it turned out to be a disaster.

Here's the full top 10:

There's only one Chelsea player among the 50 worst transfers besides those four: Fernando Torres was quite useful for the team during his time at Stamford Bridge, but a £52.7 million price tag puts him on the 39th place.
