Former Chelsea goalie Schwarzer names one key attribute Mendy will bring to Blues' 18-yard box

"They’re certainly bringing in a goalkeeper that is commanding of his 18-yard box," former Chelsea shot-stopper Mark Schwarzer told Sky Sports of the Blues' new signing Edouard Mendy.

"I think that’s something that Chelsea have lacked a little bit particularly since Courtois and Petr Cech left the club, two goalkeepers that more often than not came out and dominated their 18-yard box.

"Kepa’s not been one to carry that on. Mendy’s a big guy, he loves to come out and take crosses, and that itself will alleviate so much pressure for defenders and it’s huge for a team."

Chelsea have completed the transfer of Mendy from Rennes for a reported fee of £22m. The shot-stopper has penned down a five-year contract with the club.

Mendy made 33 appearances across all competitions last term, conceding 31 goals, keeping 13 clean sheets and helping Rennes qualify for the Champions League after finishing third in Ligue 1.
