  • The idea of a breakaway Super League came to a halt after all stakeholders in football (especially supporters) came together to oppose it.
  • The Premier League wants to ensure an act like this does not happen again.

After the top 6 English clubs along with 6 top European clubs attempted a breakaway Super League last week, the Premier League has created a 'series of measures' to keep the core of the game intact.

The league have named 3 principal ways to stop any such league in the future: an open pyramid, progression through sporting merit and the highest standards of sporting integrity.

Further, the Premier League is also creating a new owners' charter to ensure committing them to the core principles of the Premier League.

The league will also enlist the support of the UK Government to bring in appropriate legislation to protect.

Chelsea were one of the 6 Premier League clubs to be involved in the formation of the breakaway league - however, the Blues were also the first club to withdraw from the plans and later addressed an open letter to the fans apologising for their actions.
