Andriy Shevchenko leaves role as Ukraine manager: why it might matter for Chelsea in long term - explained

Former Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko has announced that he's leaving his job as the Ukraine manager after leading his national team to the Euro 2020 quarter-final.

"Together, we managed to show that our football can be competitive, productive and exciting," he said in a message on his Instagram page.

Why should it matter to the Chelsea fans? Well, The Athletic reported last month that Shevchenko is someone who is lined up to manage the Blues at some point in the future.

His great relationship with Roman Abramovich is not a secret, and his first steps in management are overwhelmingly positive as Ukraine achieved their best result ever at a European Championship under his guidance.

Of course, Shevchenko is hardly ready to manage Chelsea right now - and not just because of Thomas Tuchel's presence. The 44-year-old is yet to manage a club side, something that is presumably on his agenda.

Whatever Shevchenko is doing next, it's worth paying a bit of attention to as long as his managerial career is still on the upward trajectory.
