90 minutes were not enough for the Premier League leaders to see off a resilient 

 side at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

The Carabao Cup clash ended 1-1 in normal time and then we went to penalties where the Blues won the game 4-3. 

It was another top penalty shootout performance from 

 sealing the deal with a great pen. Watch the full highlights below:

Tuchel gives verdict on 'intense' Southampton win & how important Carabao Cup is to Blues

Thomas Tuchel said after the penalty shootout win against 

: "It was an intense match of football, nice to watch for the spectators. It was an open fight, an intense match. 

"We did a good shootout, a lot of quality. 

 saved one, it was a miss too. We missed three players that maybe would have started. I liked the energy today, it was a good game.

"When you play Southampton you know what you get, intensity, high pressing, a team full of courage and speed. It’s their identity. You have to accept things get tough, and the challenges are constantly there. That’s why I am happy with the performance and the result."

The coach then added: "Every competition is important. We don’t want to judge them. When we prepare for matches and wear the shirt, we play all in. That’s what this club and the players are all about. The players who got a chance used it."

Now that is the mentality that the coach and the club need to have. While the Carabao Cup is no doubt not as prestigious as the Premier League or the Champions League, it's still a title at the end of the day.

The Blues are through to the quarter-finals and hopefully, go all the way to win the whole thing this time.

Thomas Tuchel explains why he's 'happy' with Saul's performance vs Saints

"Was a good match, a huge step in the right direction for him. I am happy," Thomas Tuchel said about 

"We thought maybe he would be struggling with the intensity at the 70th minute but he got better and better, had chances and shots.

"We thought let’s keep him and give him the minutes. It was a good step for him." 

It was only the fourth appearance for Saul at 

, and the first one when he played all 90 minutes.

The Southampton game was arguably his best display for the Blues yet, but it was not without its flaws either. Most notably, his giveaway started the attack that led to the Saints' equaliser.
