Rating Chelsea's performance in Brighton draw based on 4 key factors

Playing on Wednesday, December 29th, Chelsea ended up dropping more points in the league, drawing 1-1 with Brighton at home.

Here's a look at our assessment of the Blues' performance:

Tactics

Brighton are a good footballing side under Graham Potter and play an expansive brand of football even when they lose.

So it was no surprise that the Seagulls edged Chelsea out when it came to possession and even managed to have more shots on goal than the home side.

Tuchel was a bit handicapped in terms of player availability but he wasn't helped by his Jorginho-Kovacic double pivot in this game. Both played quite poorly, with Kova giving the ball away a number of times.

Bissouma and Lallana both enjoyed good games against Chelsea's midfield and never allowed Tuchel's side to take control of the game.

The decision to play James down the left also didn't quite work out, with the wing-back failing to gel with Hudson-Odoi and picking up a hamstring injury.

41% of Chelsea's attack came down the right side with Pulisic in a wing-back role, but the Blues couldn't capitalize.

Rating for Tactics: 5/10

Set-Pieces

Chelsea have struggled to make much of set-pieces for a lot of the season but that wasn't the case on Wednesday, with the Blues actually scoring off of one.

Lukaku put in an excellent flick-on header from Mount's in-swinger and the Blues had a couple more opportunities in the game.

With open play creativity mostly going down the drain following Reece's departure with injury, a set-piece managed to earn Chelsea a point.

Rating for Set-Pieces: 7/10

Discipline

Chelsea conceded a whopping 14 fouls against Brighton, quite often in their own half, putting themselves in difficult positions.

This led to 4 yellow cards as well, which hampered Chelsea's ability to control the game in the latter parts of the second half.

It also allowed Brighton to get into great areas late in the game, and a well-worked move finally saw them score with a simple dink into the box.

Rating for Discipline: 4/10

Game Management

Chelsea have now dropped 11 points from winning positions in the league this season, including the 2 they squandered against Brighton.

The Blues' commitment late in games has been questionable and even though it's obvious that they are tired, the players simply need to do better.

Sloppy play allowed Brighton back into the game as Chelsea misplaced 20% of their passes on Wednesday night.

Lukaku and Mount both had opportunities late in the game to seal it but simply failed to do so when it counted. Tuchel will need to do something about this issue.

Rating for Game Management: 2/10
