Romelu Lukaku, Thiago Silva & more: rating best and worst transfers by Marina Granovskaia

Marina Granovskaia who was in charge of transfer negotiations at Chelsea is leaving the club.

So, it's time to look back at the business she's done as the club director in the past few years.

For the purposes of this post, we take the winter of the 2017/18 season as a starting point. That was the first transfer window without Michael Emenalo as a sporting director, so there was no ambiguity as to who was leading the talks from that point on.

Best

Alvaro Morata to Atletico Madrid (£48m). As the striker was already damaged goods after 18 months in London, Granovskaia did well to secure such a big payoff from Atletico

Eden Hazard to Real Madrid (£103m). This is Granovskaia's masterpiece: the Blues got over £100m for a player whose contract would've expired in a year and whose decline would start almost immediately after leaving.

Mateo Kovacic from Real Madrid (£40m). There were doubts when Chelsea decided to trigger the buyout clause in Kovacic's initial loan deal in 2019. As it turned out, the £40m fee was peanuts for one of the best midfielders in the league.

Thiago Silva from PSG (free). Even Granovskaia might be surprised how well that deal turned out to be. Silva is entering his third season at the Bridge as the Champions League winner and still one of the best players in the team at the age of 37.

Edouard Mendy from Rennes (£21m). Petr Cech deserves a lot of credit for identifying the talent who had been without a club just five years earlier. In his first season at Chelsea, he played a key role in the Champions League triumph.

Worst

Gonzalo Higuain (on loan from Juventus, £7m). The experienced Argentinian striker was supposed to be a low-risk option to replace Morata as the No.9 - but he only scored five goals and never enjoyed his time there

Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao (£72m). The worst bit about this transfer is that Chelsea missed out on Alisson while Granovskaia tried to convince Courtois to stay. When she failed, Chelsea's hand was forced into paying a massive buyout clause for an inexperienced keeper.

Fikayo Tomori to AC Milan (£26m). The centre-back fell out of favour with Frank Lampard, but he was initially loaned out to Milan when the coach's departure was already all but certain. Tuchel never had a chance to work with the player who hit the new heights in Italy.

Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan (£97m). There's already enough said about this transfer. Chelsea are almost certain to lose fortunes as a result of this deal.

Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid (free). Chelsea's attempt to extend his deal were not helped by the sanctions, but they had had plenty of time to reach an agreement with one of the team's leaders - so they have only themselves to blame.
