'We gave up this man for Lakaka': Giroud one goal away from being France top scorer, likes of Zidane and Platini behind

On Tuesday night, Olivier Giroud scored a brace in the 4-1 win over Australia at the World Cup.

That puts the 36-year-old level with Thierry Henry at the top of the list of the best goalscorers in the history of the French national team. Both forwards scored 51 goals - but Giroud has a real chance to beat that record in the coming days.

The veteran remains relevant at the top level 18 months after he was let go by Chelsea to join AC Milan at the age of 34.

As he still remains a cult hero for plenty of the Blues' fans, there's natural bitterness about his departure mixed with pride in his success for the national team.

Conn, Twitter: "France's new all-time top goal scorer. So happy for Giroud man."

Thehunterforce, Reddit: "Biggest transfer mistake in recent years"

Janty, Twitter: "Giroud is definitely going down as one of the most underrated strikers in football."

dragonsky, Reddit: "It's crazy that he is unironically considered a Chelsea legend despite the time he spent in Arsenal. I am so glad he came here, you can't help but love him. And I think he probably likes us more than Arsenal cause we helped him win trophies"

FinlayCFC, Twitter: "Giroud going down as the greatest French striker ever after beating Henry's record and leading France to another World Cup triumph"

Axei18, Twitter: "We gave up this man for Lakaka"
