What's happened to Billy Gilmour? Explained

Billy Gilmour was one of many Chelsea academy graduates who were tipped for big things when Frank Lampard was in charge of the first team.

The Scotsman was very adept at making a good first impression: was named man of the match after his FA Cup debut, Premier League debut and first Champions League start for the Blues.

However, he never managed to convince Thomas Tuchel that he was physical enough to play in the Premier League. So, he was sold for €8m to Graham Potter's Brighton — just a week before the manager moved in the opposite direction.

New manager Roberto De Zerbi has not been won over by Gilmour either. So far, the 21-year-old has made 10 appearances for the Seagulls, starting only four of those games.

Still, the Italian was complimentary when he spoke about the midfielder back in October: "I really like Billy Gilmour. I think he can improve a lot with us and for our work for next week.

"But Caicedo and Mac Allister are two big players for us. He has to find the space to play and I have to give him more space but it is difficult. We do not have Europa or Champions League, we have one game per week but there are many good young players."

Brighton fans seem to agree that Gilmour may not be good enough to start for their team regularly — but they can't deny his talent.

Cold_Potato: "Yeah I'm conflicted. Showed flashes of promise but also clearly needs to develop more. Not writing him off yet, but he'll need to improve."

_partyhat: "Promising and looked really positive on the ball, but as others have said, his execution was a bit off. I think he’s only gonna get better with more game time, very talented player."

rsjonat: "Very 50-50 in my mind tbh. Just when I think he looks good, he does something stupid. A bit like a bag of revells, you don’t quite know what you will get."

ManLikeArch: "He was decent but won't go overboard as he's been very meh in most appearances. He'll have to play next week but don't see him ever being a consistent starter"

esn111: "Of course he's not a short-term replacement for Caidedo but the potential is there. He's not one for a consistent starter but good squad option."

ChampionshipVivid971: "He was alright. I noticed that he’s bloody tiny more than him doing much interesting but he didn’t really mess up either"
