Nagelsmann agent explains why manager turned down Chelsea: 'A club in troubled waters'

After Chelsea sacked Graham Potter in early April, several managers were shortlisted for a vacant position. Mauricio Pochettino eventually won the race and is set to be confirmed as the Blues' next head coach soon, but the early favourite was Julian Nagelsmann.

So why didn't it work out? The German's agent Volker Struth has shared his version of events.

“I can confirm that Chelsea were quick to call [after Nagelsmann’ was sacked at Bayern Munich]. There were some phone conversations," he told the Phrasenmaher podcast, as quoted by the Athletic.

"It was the right decision not to go there. It’s a club in troubled waters at the moment. And their transfer policy, spending a few hundred million euros, has raised expectations that need to be met. There were also some other issues.

"He was their number one (choice), that was our information. I believe it would have happened if he had wanted it."
