Southgate explains why Palmer didn't play a single minute for England this international break

Cole Palmer was called up by England but didn't feature against Brazil and Belgium. He missed the first game altogether and was left on the bench for the second one.

The Chelsea forward picked up a minor injury early during the international break and was not fit to play, Gareth Southgate has revealed.

“I said when I named the squad there is competition for places in those wide areas," the England head coach told the Evening Standard.

“We weren't 100 per cent certain what we would get whereas with Gordon we knew and [James] Maddison we knew. I wouldn't rule Cole out of that equation.”

The 20-year-old has won two England caps. He has 11 goals and eight assists in 23 Premier League appearances so far this season for Chelsea
