Chelsea top football world in one area - the gap is huge

Chelsea have recently given unusually long contracts to youngsters and even experienced players.

Such a trend made Chelsea the leader in the remaining contract term. Teams from 59 leagues worldwide were measured for this list and Chelsea climbed to the first place with 4.11 years on average for player's contract.

As you can see the gap between Chelsea and the next team Shakhtar Donets is huge.

Here are some of the longest remaining contracts in the Chelsea squad: Fernandez, Caicedo, Mudryk - 8 years. Palmer, Madueke, Gusto - 7 years. Nkunku, Colwill, Disasi - 6 years.

Of course, this is not the whole list and the number of years on almost every player's contract looks impressive.

There are two main reasons for such long contracts.

Accounting and Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules: By spreading a player's transfer fee over a longer contract, Chelsea can reduce the annual amortization cost on their books.

For example, if a player costs £100m on an 8-year deal, it's recorded as a £12.5m yearly expense. But on a 4-year deal, it would be £25m per year, making it harder to comply with FFP.

Securing players long-term: Tying players down to lengthy contracts prevents situations where they leave on free transfers when their deals expire, as happened with Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen before.
