Explained: why Chelsea officials are pessimistic about Raheem Sterling summer exit

Raheem Sterling had an inconsistent 2023/24 season at Chelsea and infuriated many fans by producing some frustrating performances in big games.

With the Blues now pushing to sign Michael Olise, some fans believe that the club should look to sell the Englishman. That's because he won’t be required as much with the signing of another winger.

But as per The Athletic, Chelsea’s hierarchy are actually quite pessimistic about the prospect of offloading Sterling this summer.

They feel that a major obstacle that will stop them from selling him is his salary. The hierarchy has already accepted that Sterling’s £320,000-a-week wages will itself scare away sutiors.

The Blues believe that they’ll find it difficult to find a decent club who will want to pay similarly high wages to Sterling. Saudi Arabian clubs might, but the Englishman isn’t keen on moving to the country.

Thus Sterling is likely to be retained for at least another season. This is unless something drastic compels the 29-year-old to push for an exit with reduced wage terms.

Sterling scored 10 goals and provided eight assists in 43 appearances for the Blues last season.
