'Bots' reportedly created to defend Bartomeu from online criticism

Barcelona media crisis is not going away. According to information gained by El Pais, there have been dozens of fake social media accounts tweeting and posting pro-Bartomeu slogans since early 2018.

The posts were aimed at praising the president's management of the club and attacking his critics among journalists and social media influencers.

El Pais also add that these accounts could be found on the infamous database of Nicestream, a parent company of I3 Ventures.

As a reminder, according to Ser Catalunya's investigation published last week, FC Barcelona have paid almost €1m to hire multiple social media accounts to 'protect the reputation of Josep Maria Bartomeu' and 'erode the image of ex-players, election candidates, etc', as the source puts it.

These so-called 'social media influencers' are working for the PR company I3 Ventures. Ser Catalunya mention 'dozens of accounts' on both Facebook and Twitter. Marca believe their number is close to 100.They are trying to provoke the audience by discussing such controversial subjects as Leo Messi's new contract, Gerard Pique's off-field business activities and other current squad issues.

The president's position at the club has been severely affected by the recent off-field scandals, including the infamous conflict between Leo Messi and Eric Abidal and allegations that the club hired a PR company to improve Bartomeu's image and tarnish the ones of Xavi, Gerard Pique and even Messi.

There are even rumours that snap elections could be held to deplatform Bartomeu.
