Lineker: 'When I watch Ronaldo I admire him, when I watch Messi he gives me joy'

Gary Lineker is a famous BBC Match of the Day presenter in his native England. However, he also seems to be a die-hard Barcelona supporter as he spent three years at the Camp Nou stadium between 1986 and 1989.

Lineker gets involved in the neverending Leo Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debates and picks one side. It's easy to guess who exactly he is backing.

Goal quote Lineker as saying: "Messi or Ronaldo? Messi. I love them both, but if you say on Twitter, ‘that's an unbelievably great goal from the wonderful Cristiano Ronaldo’ you'll get Messi fans on your case and if you say something brilliant about Messi, which I do a lot because he's ridiculous, you'll get Ronaldo fans on your case."

He elaborates on this idea: "You can love them both and admire them both which I do, but they're very different. Ronaldo's an athlete. He's driven, he's got the absolute best out of his game. He's the best header of the ball I've ever seen and the best goalscorer I've ever seen. But Messi is also as good a goalscorer as there's ever been and he's as good a passer as you'll ever see and as good a dribbler as you'll ever see."

Lineker finishes up: "When I watch Ronaldo I admire him, when I watch Messi he gives me joy and for me, that's the difference."

Both Messi and Ronaldo are nominated for the 2018-2019 Champions League Striker of the Season award. The Argentinean is at risk of missing the La Liga opening fixture against Athletic Club this Friday because of a calf injury. Cristiano, meanwhile, resumed the Serie A campaign a week later.

Last season, Messi became both La Liga and Champions League top scorer 36 and 12 goals respectively. As for Ronaldo, he only managed to score 28 goals following his sensational Juventus move.
