Terrifying stats: Vermaelen has missed 240 games due to injuries

Thomas Vermaelen is injured once again. The veteran defender completed the full 90 minutes in the most recent La Liga fixture against Valladolid which was won thanks to Lionel Messi's only goal of the night. This match took place on Saturday while on Sunday FC Barcelona announced that the Belgian suffered a calf injury and would have to miss the upcoming UCL clash against Lyon.

Vermaelen only started featuring regularly as he took part in the last five Barcelona matches in La Liga. Three of them - against Leganes, Valencia and Valladolid this Saturday - the Belgian lasted until the very last minute. The club's official media label his most recent problem as the light one, however, this is the third injury he has suffered this season.

According to the data provided by Transfermarkt, Vermaelen has suffered around 27 injuries since early 2007 when he was still 20 years old. In total, he has missed around 240 games during his long and illustrious career due to several injuries. This figure is compared to the total length of four or even five full seasons.

Vermaelen's most recent injuries, as per Transfermarkt:

The 33-year-old defender has played 11 games for Barcelona in all competitions this season. He sustained two injuries this season already that forced him to miss 85 days and 15 games in total. He is now forced to miss Tuesday night's Champions League clash against Lyon. Two other centre-backs - Samuel Umtiti and Jeison Murillo - are called up in the travelling squad.
