Spitting could become a bookable offence when football returns

FIFA's chief medical expert Michel D’Hooghe has called for spitting to be banned and punishable with a yellow card when football resumes, as per the Telegraph.

"This is a common practice in football and it is not very hygienic," he explained.

“So when we start football again I think we should have to avoid that at maximum. The question is whether that will be possible. Perhaps they can give a yellow card.

“It is unhygienic and a good way to spread the virus. This is one of the reasons why we have to be very careful before we start again. I am not pessimistic but I am rather sceptical at the moment.”

Spitting would risk the spread of coronavirus and potentially endanger anyone who comes in contact - even outside the football pitch.

Meanwhile, there is still no official date for the Spanish top-tier to resume. There were talks that the clubs could restart training already next week, on May 4. However, nothing has been confirmed yet.

On Sunday, Spain's Minister of Health Salvador Illa made a grim prediction regarding the resumption of La Liga, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo: "I cannot tell you now if professional football is going to be able to restart its activity before the summer. It would be reckless on my part."

In any case, it's highly unlikely for the Spanish stadiums to open their doors for the fans before the end of this year.
