"I tried to convince Sergio Busquets not to retire from international football, but he had already made that decision with a clear idea. I respected his decision," Spain's new coach Luis de la Fuente has said.
"I want to recognise the important role that Busquets has left in Spanish football. It's a shame that he is retiring. He has been one of the most important players in Spanish football."
Busquests announced his decision to retire from the national team a few weeks after Spain were eliminated from the World Cup. With La Roja, the Barcelona midfielder became world champion 2010 and European champion in 2012.
