Barcelona are said to be targeting Lionel Messi as a fourth midfielder, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The idea is that Messi will be a creative force playing in midfield than as an attacking winger or striker.
This season Messi has been instrumental for PSG in terms of creating goals. He already has 18 assists in 34 games.
At Barca, Xavi has often played four midfielders in the absence of Ousmane Dembele.

In this system, Xavi would play Messi, Gavi, Pedri and Frenkie De Jong as his midfielders. Dembele will play right-wing.
Notice that Messi plays slightly behind Lewandowski, so his role will be that of an attacking midfielder - a proper lynchpin for the team.
