Xavi wants Ter Stegen to recover and return to action as soon as possible, according to Juan Jimenez of Diario AS.
The reason is simple, Xavi and his staff are concerned about the shaky performances of Inaki Pena in goal.
The Spanish goalkeeper naturally replaced Ter Stegen and played some brilliant matches at the outset, notably in games against FC Porto and Atletico. But his form dipped soon afterwards.
As things stand, Pena is conceding 1.8 goals per match which is alarming. The 24-year-old has picked the ball from his net 26 times in his 14 appearances. He's managed just two sheets since, one of which was in the Super Cup.
Barcelona are concerned that Pena doesn't have a commanding presence in the box and is easily bullied by powerful strikers. One such occasion was in the game against Athletic Bilbao where their striker Sancet dominated the area to score an easy header.
Barca's defence has also been suspect this season which combines to make Pena's job even harder.
Barcelona might be thinking of signing a quality backup keeper in the coming summer given Pena's performances.
Meanwhile, Ter Stegen is only expected to recover from his back injury in mid-February. The German shot-stopper recently stated he's already working on the ball as he improves his fitness.
