Manuel Neuer was expected to be Germany's first-choice Germany goalkeeper for the Euro 2024 tournament, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen missing out again.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann surprisingly made the decision three months ahead of the tournament in Germany after the team gathered for upcoming friendlies against France and the Netherlands.
Nagelsmann had said he would talk to all players about their planned role on Monday and Tuesday. There has so far been no official confirmation.
However, Germany have announced that Neuer left training early on Wednesday due to a torn muscle fiber in his left adductor and is out of the two international matches.
With this development, Ter Stegen could become his country's number 1 at the Euros. The 31-year-old who has been Neuer's national team rival since 2012 has 38 caps.
