Barcelona can only realistically sign Bernardo Silva this summer if they sell a big player — that player is likely to be Frenkie De Jong. However, Raphinha and Ronald Araujo are other options.
De Jong's sale will easily bring in €65-70m into Barca's purse. That would help them meet La Liga's 1:1 rule, allowing them to spend the equivalent of what they save or receive in transfer fees.
Barca have midfielders that can do exactly what De Jong does and even better. Players like Gavi, Pedri, Gundogan and the emerging Fermin Lopez.
What's more, De Jong has struggled with injuries this season and has largely performed below his standards when fit. The Dutchman is also on an inflated salary and is Barca's highest earner.
Thus, selling De Jong will free up space in Barca's wage bill and give them the financial capability to pay Bernardo's release clause.
