'I need to improve': Ter Stegen seemingly blames himself and players for Xavi sack

Xavi has bowed out as Barcelona coach after 142 games in charge at the helm. His sacking comes on the back of a trophy-less season for the club.

Barca's second captain Ter Stegen believes the players probably let the outgoing tactician down.

"We have good players, but we must work more to compete. On a personal level, I have to improve," Ter Stegen told La Liga TV after Barca beat Sevilla 2-1.

"It's time for Xavi to rest. He deserves all the best, and we'll always be there for him.

"Xavi gave us a lot and we're so grateful to him. We wish him all the best. He's been a friend of mine for years, and it's not easy," Ter Stegen concludes.

Ter Stegen is probably right. Barca were undone by reckless mistakes this season, particularly in big games like El Clasico and the Champions League.

The German goalie conceded 37 goals in 35 games this season which sounds astounding considering how good he's expected to be.
