"With Barcelona, I played everywhere they needed me, so it was a bit chaotic, with a lot of position changes," Ilkay Gundogan has told The Athletic, via Marca.
"I had to constantly adapt. Sometimes, playing well also means knowing what position you play, who plays around you and feeling comfortable with that. In the national team, I feel very comfortable on the pitch with my teammates and with my position," he added.
Although Gundogan was among Barca's best players this season, he indeed had to do a lot of uncommon stuff like dropping to the defensive midfield to start attacks. This largely had to do with the team's injury crisis in the midfield.
The 33-year-old is likely to have a fixed position under Hansi Flick next season, sitting just behind Robert Lewandowski in the attacking midfield. Flick's trademark 4-2-3-1 formation could suit him really well.
