Chirivella on playing for first team: 'Mentally I feel ready'

"Mentally I feel ready," Pedro Chirivella told the Evening Standard. "I train every day with the first team and I feel I am getting closer to the level.

"I came very early, when I was only 17, and maybe I was not ready yet. Now I feel I am getting there.

"I am getting very good feedback from the players. My mentality has changed and hopefully I can carry on.

"It’s a special environment. Everyone at the club, whether it’s the first team, the Academy or whoever, we all play like a Liverpool team. I think we showed that tonight. I’m very happy.

"Chelsea game? I can’t wait, but first a few days off!"

Chirivella was one of the standout performers in the FA Cup replay game against Shrewsbury. However, at the age of 22, he surely needs to get more playing time in senior football.

He has not signed an extension to his contract which runs out in June this year. The midfielder could leave the club in the summer but there are reports that Liverpool are considering offering him a new deal.

The Spaniard started his career at the academy his hometown club Valencia, whom he captained at various youth levels. After nearly 10 years with Los Che, Pedro joined the Liverpool Academy in 2013.

Since 2015, Chirivella has been playing senior football. The Spaniard has had three loan spells - at Go Ahead Eagles, Willem II and Extremadura, with the last one kind of breaking down due to transfer documentations issues.

All in all, Pedro has made 10 appearances for the Reds' senior side so far, 5 of which have come this season.
