Homegrown van Dijk? Academy kid Rhys Williams opens up on learning from Virgil

Preston-born Rhys Williams has played for Liverpool since U10 level after being spotted at a youth tournament. Being a schoolboy, the centre-back made his debut for the U18 side in the season 2016/17 and has become an immense part of the team ever since.

In November 2018, the exciting youngster featured for Neil Critchley's U23s in the clash against Villarreal. before signing his first professional contract with the Reds and received well-deserved call-up England U18s in February 2019.

Described as a commanding centre-half, the 18-year-old doesn't need to look too far for a role model. Thus, Williams has shared his thoughts on Virgil van Dijk speaking to Liverpoolfc.com:

"I'm just taller than him! But his stature is just ridiculous.

"He's so calm and confident in what he does. You don't see him panicking in big situations. He's just a great role model for everyone.

"I watch all the Liverpool games and he's the main player I focus on. If they do analysis after the game and it's on him, then I'll record it or watch it there and then just to see if I can take bits of his game into mine."
