Rhys Williams' Academy team-mate: 'I always thought he would become a top, top player'

"When I see Rhys coming on, I miss my friends and the coaches, but I’m happy I left," Edvard Tagseth, who left the Reds' Academy for Rosenborg in his native Norway last year, told the Liverpool ECHO.

"I had the Ajax game on in the background and I heard there was a sub coming on, so I watched the telly and it was Rhys standing there! It was amazing and he won some headers there as well. It was just like seeing him in the U18s!

"At U18s and when he played up with the U23s when I was there, he was always dominant with his physicality, and he is very good on the ball as well. I always thought he would become a top, top player."

Part of the Liverpool Academy since the age of 10, Williams went on loan to the National League side Kidderminster Harriers last season.

After playing in the 6th tier of English football, Rhys came back to Liverpool and has already made 4 appearances for the first team this campaign, including 2 whole League Cup games, a one-minute cameo against Ajax and 60 minutes against Midtjylland.
