Why fear of signing players from Africa next season due to AFCON are overblown - explained by fan

The move to play it in mid-season will see Liverpool's African players in Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita will be gone for around a month.

Liverpool fan Zipud has explained on This Is Anfield why the fear over signing African players such as Patson Daka should be kept in check:

"Here are some bits of information concerning the nations cup:

"1. Sometime back, CAF rescheduled future AFCON tournaments some to be held between the months of June-July to avoid the disruption to European club seasons.

"2. The same would have happened for this tournament if it weren't for the fact that apparently Cameroon's peak rainy season is in that June-July period.

"3. Daka is Zambian and his nation didn't qualify for this tournament (actually haven't qualified for the last 3 if I'm correct).

"4. Also because the tournament will be held in "odd" years, it means we won't have a situation were players are away at the same time as their European counterparts.

"So a lot of concerns I've seen here about buying African players are a little bit overblown. Now of course this might change given the current situation we are in but till then, no issues here. So to not buy a player because of one tournament would be ludicrous."

Daka has been in sensational form this season, scoring 20 times in just 18 league games for RB Salzburg - it would be an interesting signing for the Reds to make.
