5 players Liverpool should not target for 5 reasons despite rumours

Reason: transfer fee

Liverpool are keen on signing a new centre-forward and the Aston Villa hitman looks like a good fit for the Reds.

But with Grealish's widely-reported £100m move to City, the Clarets would do everything to keep their star forward.

And they would slap an exorbitant price tag on Watkins to avoid losing two key players in one summer.

Villa signed Ollie for £33m, and it could take at least twice that price to convince them to sell. Watkins simply does not cost that much.

Reason: injuries

The Portugal international is said to be admired by Klopp, and his displays at the Euros prove he is a world-class player.

While Renato is a perfect Wijnaldum replacement ability-wise, he is not as durable as the Dutchman.

Sanches picked up 8 injuries over the past two seasons, missing a total of 163 days. There are already too many injury-prone players in the Liverpool squad to sign another one.

Saul Niguez

Reason: decline

Atletico Madrid are ready to part ways with Saul Niguez and Liverpool are reportedly interested in the midfielder.

Well, we shouldn't be. Niguez earned rave reviews for his performances in the 2019–20 season but in the 2020–21 campaign, he wasn't Atletico's key man.

He has declined as a footballer and these stats show that. He has gotten better in chance creation but Liverpool need an all-round midfielder—and Saul's defensive and distribution numbers have gone downhill compared to the 2019–20 season.

For the quoted €60m fee, we can definitely find someone better.

Reason: squad role, injuries

As the saying goes, you cannot step into the same river twice. Danny Ings is a spectacular player: a Prem-proven goalscorer

But as per The Athletic, he wants to play an important role for his new club if he leaves Southampton, and it's something Liverpool can't guarantee.

If Ings joins, he'll be behind Jota and Firmino in the pecking order, and while he will have his chances, he won't be a starting XI player for the Reds.

Additionally, Danny is quite injury prone. He spent more than a year of his Liverpool career on the sidelines, and missed 21 So'ton games in 3 previous at St Mary's.

Reason: discipline

The Switzerland captain put in a Rolls Royce performance against France at the Euros and Liverpool instantly got linked with a move for the Arsenal man.

The Gunners seem prepared to let Xhaka go for a modest £15–20m fee but Liverpool should not buy him for a particular reason: he often tends to lose his temper on the pitch.

He has been booked 58 times in 220 games for the Gunners: that's a yellow card in every four games, on top of his 3 straight red cards.

And telling his own fans to 'f*** off' would simply not be tolerated at Anfield.
