Why is 'rent boy' chant homophobic? You asked, gay Liverpool fans answered

A portion of travelling Liverpool fans sang the 'rent boy' chant at Norwich youngster Billy Gilmour at Carrow Road on Saturday.

The chant has been directed at Chelsea players (Gilmour is on loan with the Canaries) for years.

And Liverpool condemned the chant after the game, releasing the following statement via Twitter:

"The chant is offensive and inappropriate - a message we have repeatedly communicated alongside Kop Outs.

"We urge supporters to remember the inclusive values of the club and to refrain from using it in the future."

Some fans perceive it as nothing more than innocent banter, with a Liverpool supporter nicknamed Macca writing on Tribuna:

"This is what the world is coming to, that a full on fact is getting labelled as homophobic ffs. Chelsea rent boy is exactly what he is, Norwich are renting him from Chelsea. I seriously give up with society if this is what it's coming to."

However, the term 'rent boy' is homophobic, as brilliantly explained by a fan nicknamed Tim Parkes—his post was retweeted by Kop Outs!, an organisation for Liverpool's LGBT fans.

"Respectfully, it is [homophobic]. Rent boy is a pejorative term for a male prostitute who caters specifically for men.

"To use the term in a derogatory manner is homophobic. The origin or supposed 'context' of the chant is irrelevant. It's homophobic.

"Don't sing it, or even defend it."
