Why Curtis Jones and Neco Williams aren't named in Liverpool's Champions League squad - explained

Liverpool's 24-man squad for the group stages of the Champions League was named on Saturday with the Reds ready for another European adventure.

However, despite having firmly become a part of the first-team picture, Curtis Jones and Neco Williams were both not named in the list.

There is a simple reason for this though, as Liverpool can name any players that are under 21 and come through the academy as 'homegrown' players.

These players don't have to be registered in the squad but can be used during games regardless.

Harvey Elliott has been named in the squad because despite being just 18, he doesn't qualify as homegrown, having been signed from Fulham having already made a senior appearance.

With Williams and Jones both now 20, this will be the last season the Reds are able to play this trick, from next year, they would need to make space on the squad to have the duo included.
