Van Dijk seals World Cup spot, Fabinho keeps Messi & Co in his pocket & more: international round-up

Virgil van Dijk played the entirety of the Netherlands' 2-0 victory against Norway. The victory sealed the Netherlands' first place in Group G and it means Virg will go to the 2022 World Cup!

"I am extremely proud of this team," the Liverpool defender said after the game.

"It can be tricky to play around with the idea that any mistake can be fatal, but we've embraced it. I can't speak for everyone, but I was really looking forward to it."

Virg kept the opposition attackers at bay, making two tackles and four clearances.

Neco Williams and Divock Origi faced each other in Group E as leagers Belgium drew 1-1 with Wales. Neco was used in a wing-back role in a 3-4-3 shape and was very dangerous up front, coming very close to scoring a belter from the edge of the box — but his shot was saved by the goalie.

The striker was given a rare start but he had to be taken off in the 59th minute with a knock. The Belgium head coach Martinez said it was a dead leg and he should be available for Liverpool on Saturday.

Belgium have won their group and will go to Qatar directly while Wales will have to qualify through play-offs.

Takumi Minamino played 62 minutes in Japan's 1-0 victory against Oman while Kostas Tsimikas featured at left wing-back for Greece in their 1-1 home draw against Kosovo.

Diogo Jota started and played for 83 minutes as Portugal succumbed to a last-minute home loss to Serbia. Now Portugal faces play-offs to reach the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as the defeat saw him drop to the second place in the group.

Mo Salah played half an hour in Egypt's dead-rubber clash against Gabon. The forward came on when the score was 1-1 and played a key role in his side snatching a 2-1 victory. Both sides have progressed to the play-off stage of African World Cup qualifiers.

On a sidenote, Arsenal forward Aubameyang missed the game for Gabon through injury and is a doubt for the Liverpool game on Saturday.

Fabinho and Alisson both played 90 minutes in Brazil's 0-0 draw with Argentina. Fab impressed, helping keep Messi, Di Maria and other Argentine attackers at bay. Both teams have qualified for the World Cup.
