Liverpool GK coach Achterberg explains what Alisson should do to stay world-class in 8 or 9 years

"You see Manuel Neuer still going at the top level and he’s nearly 36," Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg told the Athletic when asked about Alisson.

"Samir Handanovic is still playing regularly for Inter Milan at 37. Edwin van der Sar played until he was 40. Gianluigi Buffon isn’t at the top level anymore but is still playing at 43 for Parma.

"It depends if you keep yourself in the right shape and keep your mind strong and focused. You need to create new challenges for yourself to ensure you stay ready and in the right physical and mental shape.

"At some point the power in your legs goes. That can be at 37 or 38 but then you still have so much knowledge about positional play and decision making which means you can overcome a lot."

Alisson is 29 now, an age when goalkeepers typically reach their peak. His contract with Liverpool expires in 2027.
