'Sometimes we have money, sometimes it's Covid': Guardiola fires back at Van Dijk's suggestion that City have been lucky

Virgil van Dijk claimed last week that Man City have had a bit of luck in the title race, pointing to their lack of major losses through Covid and injury in December.

City manager Pep Guardiola has now responded to that, addressing Van Dijk's words in his pre-match press conference before his side takes on Chelsea.

“If they believe we are lucky, ok we are lucky,” Guardiola said.

“Thank you, what can I say? The pandemic is everywhere and you are exposed every single day to get it and we are not an exception.

“If they believe that is the reason why then maybe. Sometimes it’s the money we have, sometimes it’s Covid.

“The situation is all around the world. We have injuries, we have Covid, maybe we don’t say which ones.

“We had a lot of players with Covid, a lot of backroom staff with Covid. In the start of the season we had a lot of incredibly tough injuries.”

Man City have been on something of a tear, winning 10 Premier League games in a row and creating a gap at the top of the table.

Liverpool will be hoping they drop points against Chelsea so that they have a chance of staying in the title race.
