'Utterly ridiculous': James Pearce's damning assessment of Southgate's inability to use Trent effectively

Journalist James Pearce has slammed Gareth Southgate as Trent Alexander-Arnold didn't even make it to the bench for England's Nations League game against Germany tonight.

"Southgate’s abject failure to harness [Trent's] talent throughout his reign as England boss says a lot more about his glaring deficiencies as a manager than it does about [Trent's] ability.

"On the one hand, his omission from the 23-man squad to face Germany is hardly a great surprise. He was an unused substitute during Friday’s miserable defeat to Italy and has become wearily accustomed to being overlooked by Southgate.

"Yet, with his World Cup dream now in serious doubt, it seems utterly ridiculous that a player so gifted can’t even get on the bench considering the run of wretched England performances Southgate has overseen.

"Alexander-Arnold hasn’t been at his brilliant best at club level so far this season, but the same could be said for some of those selected ahead of him. The reality is that his dynamic, attacking skillset just doesn’t fit with Southgate’s cautious brand of football.

"Southgate seems to obsess so much about what he thinks Alexander-Arnold can’t do that he’s blind to the quality he could add to a team that’s lost its way alarmingly."

Even though it's technically good news for the Liverpool fans that he won't have a chance to get injured, it's still unfortunate for Trent on a personal level if aspirations of playing at the World Cup may be dented because of the incompetence of a manager.
