The referee came under a lot of scrutiny for his decisions in Liverpool's 3-2 loss to 

“I owe you an apology, Jurgen,” said Oliver, as per Football Insider. 

Jurgen accepted the apology and the pair are said to have a good relationship behind the scenes.

 was poor, it was nowhere near being as bad as referee Michael Oliver's and the VAR's.

The VAR chose to blatantly ignore Gabriel Magalhaes' raised hand slamming the ball in the Arsenal box early in the game and later Oliver chose to award Arsenal a penalty that Klopp viewed as being 'very, very soft.' Later on Martinelli also stamped on Trent's ankle that has left him with a worrying injury.

Here's what the fans thought about the level of refereeing on display at the Emirates last evening.

: "Another game where the officials decide the end result. Cant wait for this to be forgotten in about 2 days. Nothing will ever change for the better in this miserable sport."

: "Yeah we were shit but the officials were fucking atrocious. Our own fans brush it aside cuz we’re shit and deserved to lose but it was decisions like this last season that decided the title."

Klopp on Arsenal's penalty: 'If it's a penalty, it's very, very soft'

"If it's a penalty, it's very, very soft," 

 told Sky when asked about the referee's decision to award 

's challenge on Jesus in the second half.

"Mr England [VAR] didn't think it was worth sending the referee to the screen, same in the first half with Diogo on Gabriel [handball]. We can't change that anymore.

"We should have sorted it before the penalty. We didn't do that."

You can see that Thiago barely touched Jesus:

This is very different from a clear handball by Gabriel in the first half. Yet no penalty was given for this:
