Man City 3-2 Liverpool: LIVE updates, reactions, stats

✍️ Post-match ratings are coming up later. Here's a brief summary of the game.

Man City were the more positive side from the start and were rewarded for that within 10 minutes when Haaland opened the score.

Liverpool equalised against the run of play, with Carvalho converting the first chance the Reds had there. After that, Liverpool managed to take the game to the City half on some occasions but without any result.

The second half started with both teams scoring within three minutes. In the 58th minute, however, City took the lead for the third time thanks to the Reds' awful defending at a corner.

Klopp's side, and especially Darwin Nunez, had a few chances to equalise again but could not find the breakthrough. As a result, Liverpool have failed to defend the Carabao Cup trophy they won last season.

🏁 Full time. Liverpool are knocked out of the Carabao Cup.

🗣️ Reactions to the first half.

Dan Kennett, Twitter: "Tough 1st game back and all that, but all the same issues that we saw pre-WC are still there. Intensity is non-existent. Some shocking individual performances as well"

Abyss, This Is Anfield: "OMG I'm still amazed at just how much better club football can be compared to International footy played at the highest level! Super high quality match! They played nearly their best team while we're playing a largely B/C team and still going toe to toe with them!

✍️ A brief summary of the first half.

It was all City at the start, with Pep Guardiola surprising his opposite number with a very aggressive high press.

It brought results after 10 minutes when Erling Haaland found himself on the receiving end of Kevin de Bruyne's cross. Joe Gomez's defending left a lot to be desired there.

And yet, Liverpool somehow found a way and equalised at the first opportunity. Matip's surging run started it all, with Fabio Carvalho slotting it home in the end.

The rest of the half was quite entertaining with plenty of chances for both sides. But the biggest event was James Milner's injury that forced Klopp into a first-half sub, with Nat Phillips coming on.

⏸️ Half-time. Man City and Liverpool are level at the break.

⌚ 43' A monster tackle from Phillips on Haaland!

Ian Doyle, Twitter: "Phillips v Haaland is the battle we have all wanted to see."

MycoJoe, Reddit: "Nat Phillips clears this Norwegian tap-in merchant"

⌚ 42' Nunez fires wide!

thanksfc, Reddit: "It's fine, it's what Nunez does almost every game. Few big misses, then monsters out for a goal or more."

🤕 🔄️ 38' Milner goes off injured. Nat Phillips coming on. Gomez shifts to right-back.

TheRR135, Reddit: "Ooh with Big Nat coming on and Gomez going left back our defending might improve"

skizofreniktamer, This Is Anfield: "That right side was not poor enough. Now it will be Gomez at right back."

Anfield Edition, Twitter: "Not like Calvin Ramsay, an actual right-back, is on the bench or anything. So that’s James Milner and now Joe Gomez, neither of whom are full-backs, ahead of Ramsay?"

⌚ 36' Big save from Kelleher on Gundogan.

⌚ 35' Some beef between Rodri and Carvalho. The City player somehow avoids a yellow after barging into the youngster.

ImJayJunior, Reddit: "Bajetic deserves the yellow but the City player grabbing his arm and then booting him in the leg atter, Rodri kicking Fabio in the leg and then full body charging him...are both a red card if your name was Darwin Nunez."

⌚ 24' City still on the front foot, but Liverpool are a bit more ambitious too.

⚽ 20' GOOOOAAAAAAAAL! Carvalho equalises! Out of the blue, that!

Paul Gorst, Twitter: "Liverpool level with their first real move of the night. Great work from Matip and then Milner and then Carvalho rolls it home."

nicolascagevampire, Reddit: "Much better from Fabio. He has a very poor start but now a redemption."

Vlatko Georgievski, This Is Anfield: "Joelinho, the best playmaker in the big wide world"

⌚ 15' Nunez hits the post... but he was offside anyway.

Michael Clark, This Is Anfield: "Nunez lost track of the line - again."

⌚ 13' All City so far. Their high pressing causes all sorts of problems.

Pure_Measurement_529, Reddit: "Look at the 2 midfielders. When we don’t have Thiago, Fabinho and Henderson, the dropoff to the others is absurd."

⚽ 10' Goal for City. Haaland does his thing after De Bruyne's cross.

Ian Doyle, Twitter: "Didn't take long and on this early evidence a long night awaits for LFC."

mrshandanar, Reddit: "Gomez checks Haaland's position multiple times and still doesn't mark up"

DaveOCKOP, Twitter: "Typical Haaland goal but Gomez needs to do better. Caught flat footed. That can't happen against Haaland of all people."

⌚ 7' Big chance for City! Haaland beats the offside trap and sets up Palmer for a tap-in, but the youngster gets it terribly wrong.

8u11etpr00f, Reddit: "Bruh Bajcetic and Elliott just let Palmer come to a complete standstill and pick a pass without pressuring him"

Judge Red, This Is Anfield: "I don't like it. They press high and we have some kids involved there. Need cour and luck"

⌚ 2' Nunez wins a corner but it leads to nothing.

ryboyin99, Reddit: "The stark differences in commentary excitement between Haaland through on goal and Nunez on goal speak the bias"

⌚ 1' We're underway! Haaland attempts a shot within 30 seconds, but it goes well over the bar.

🗣️ Jurgen Klopp has already spoken about Roberto Firmino's injury and other first-team regulars missing the game.

👉 In case you missed it, here are the lineups.

Man City XI: Ortega; Lewis, Akanji, Laporte, Ake; Rodri, De Bruyne, Gundogan; Mahrez, Palmer, Haaland.

Liverpool XI: Kelleher; Milner, Gomez, Matip, Robertson; Bajcetic, Elliott, Thiago; Salah, Carvalho, Darwin.

👋 Hello and welcome back to football we really care about - The Carabao Cup!

In fairness, today is a massive game as Liverpool are hosted by Man City in the Round of 16. Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have fielded pretty strong lineups, which means neither team will take this game lightly.
