Recalling what Dortmund boss said about sacking Jurgen Klopp after 7 years & one miserable season

Jurgen Klopp entered the top tier of coaches during his stint at Borussia Dortmund as his side beat Bayern Munich twice to the Bundesliga title and reached the Champions League final in 2013.

The 2014-15 season, however, started diabolically for Dortmund: at halfway stage, they were in the relegation area.

Despite that, Klopp was not sacked. It was his decision to leave the club where he spent seven years.

Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke accepted Klopp's resignation - but he admitted shedding some tears as he did that.

"You know it too: it’s better to leave now after seven years,” Jurgen said,” Watzke wrote in his book ‘REAL LOVE. A life with BVB’, published in installments by Bild via SportWitness.

"We did not try to change his mind anymore. But that was maybe a mistake. Perhaps it would have been better if we had exchanged the entire team – not the coach.

"Because I knew that, we would never get back such a coach. When I said goodbye, real tears came.

"Such a relationship, as I had with Jurgen over seven years at BVB, that did not exist before. And such a relationship will probably never happen again.

"This is a bit like when the children move out. You also know that it will happen at some point, but you still miss them."

The Liverpool fans can only sympathise with those feelings - as well as the people at the club. Klopp has dramatically changed the fortunes of the club since arriving at Anfield in October 2015.

It appears that Klopp will be making the decision when he decides to leave Liverpool. As it stands, his contract runs until 2026.
