Gakpo was not of Liverpool's interest 6 months before move, signing 'led by coaching staff' - Sky Sports

According to Sky Sports' Melissa Reddy, Cody Gakpo's transfer to Liverpool might not have happened if it wasn't for Jurgen Klopp.

The Dutch forward was not of the club's interest in the summer when he was on the verge of joining Leeds and was considered by Man United.

However, his eventual move was led by the coaching staff, the report says, highlighting Jurgen Klopp's increased role in recruitment.

Gakpo was signed after Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino all suffered injuries.

The 23-year-old has been portrayed as an eventual successor to Firmino. However, the Brazilian is now close to signing a new contract which puts Liverpool's squad management in even sharper focus.
