'His profile is more similar': Carragher claims Gakpo could become Firmino's long-term replacement

"I think it’s interesting in the role of Nunez and Gakpo because Nunez has been brought as a centre forward and Gakpo has played most of his games on the left side of a front three but when you actually think of how Liverpool have played with that famous front three for so many years," Jamie Carragher said after the Liverpool win, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

"It’s been Firmino dropping in and the wide players have had the penetration and the pace.

"I just think actually watching Gakpo, it feels like his profile is more similar to Firmino than the other wide players who have blistering pace to run in behind.

"Could it actually be what we’ve seen tonight where Nunez finds himself on the left a lot more and Gakpo actually plays in that hole? His main strength, when I’ve watched him in these first few weeks, is actually with the ball. When the ball comes into his feet, you don’t feel like he’s going to lose it."

Gakpo, indeed, played mainly on the left side of the attacking line at PSV - and he largely succeeded there, registering 21 goal contributions this season before moving to Anfield.

However, the Dutchman seems to be finding his feet after a tough first month. Against Everton, he produced a very solid performance and was rewarded for it with a simple tap-in to open his tally at Liverpool.
