Liverpool settle on frontrunner to become next sporting director - he's Klopp's ally (reliability: 5 stars)

According to The Telegraph and other sources, Liverpool are set to appoint veteran German executive Jorg Schmadtke as their new sporting director.

The 59-year-old would be quite a leftfield appointment as he has never worked outside Germany before.

Schmadtke has previously worked at clubs like Alemannia Aachen, Hannover and Cologne. His last job was at Wolfsburg but he left the club after the January transfer window this season.

The German is described in the report as an ally of Jurgen Klopp which suggests that the manager's influence on the decisions off the pitch is rising.

He is known for his outspoken character, but also for recruitment that allows the clubs to get value for their money.

Schmadtke would replace current Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward who leaves at the end of this season. He's been in the job for less than a year after his predecessor Michael Edwards' departure.
