'I will never be that': Trent admits one former Liverpool player can't be replaced directly

Trent Alexander-Arnold has become the new Liverpool vice-captain, but he won't be able to be another James Milner, he told the Daily Mail.

"I play a role by making sure I drive standards every day," Trent said as he explained his new responsibilities.

"Losing Milner, you can’t replace that directly. It will take numerous people. Others have to step up. We need to make sure that the way he kept driving us forward is replaced.

"I am self-aware. I know I will never be a James Milner. I will never be that type of leader but the leadership qualities I do have, I need to show and they need to be seen and heard and used in a way that is effective for the team.

"I need to keep pushing forward to try to achieve the things I want to achieve."

Milner was a key player on and off the pitch for Liverpool for eight years before leaving for Brighton this summer. The veteran has already made his official debut for his new team.

There's little doubt, however, that Trent will relish the chance to play a senior role at his boyhood club - starting from this Sunday when Liverpool take on Chelsea.
