'That's f*cking awful!': Fans react to appalling statement released by Luton Town over tragedy chanting

Luton Town released a statement a day after their fans at Kenilworth Road were involved in tragedy chanting directed at Liverpool fans.

"Luton Town Football Club is saddened by reports of inappropriate chanting towards Liverpool supporters during yesterday’s Premier League fixture at Kenilworth Road," started the statement.

The issue was then sidelined for a little bit as Luton Town believed it was important to mention how 'electric' the atmosphere was in the stadium and how good their team was.

"The atmosphere inside the stadium was electric for the most part of a pulsating game, in which Rob Edwards’ side came close to pulling off one of the results of the season."

They then went on to say, "while we do not wish to dampen the atmosphere at our home ground in any way, we are extremely disappointed that a small number of supporters soured the occasion with chants that may be interpreted as being in relation to tragedies that have affected Liverpool FC in the past."

It seems it was more important for them to highlight that they did not want to "dampen their atmosphere," one which includes fans chanting about rival fans' deaths, with their statement.

The above statement also included caveats such as "small number of supporters" chanting about what "may be interpreted," as chants relating to Liverpool tragedies.

If you thought that was the worst of it, it wasn't.

Luton then went on to excuse their fans for doing it by saying that it was "evident that a number of people may have taken part without knowledge that the words used were in relation to the Hillsborough and Heysel tragedies."

Luton add that they will look at CCTV footage and that perpetrators "could face stadium bans and potential criminal prosecutions."

Liverpool fans have been understandably enraged by what is an absolutely appalling statement.

Ryan: "This is why Luton took ages to make a statement then. They’ve spent 24 hours trying to shoehorn every caveat possible into it.

"Small number of supporters, some didn’t know what they were singing - it’s all such bollocks and sugarcoating it like this is not helpful at all."

Trev: "Just looked up Luton Town Statement in the dictionary and it said "mealy mouthed trite bollox."

LF: "Luton fans decided that their time on the big stage should involve tragedy chanting, this only backed up by an embarrassingly poor club statement.

"Take your garden shed back to non-league, sh*thole!"

Paul: "That Luton statement is fucking awful. Club should be fined purely for that. "May be interpreted" "sang without knowledge of what it means." They've just made it to the Premier League, not to the fucking planet. They well knew what they were singing & the club should own it."
