Lovren slams Yakubu over Salah quote – but there's a catch

Former Nigeria star Yakubu was recently quoted by an Instagram page called FootyEmporium calling Mo Salah 'not world-class'.

"Salah is not world-class in my opinion," read the quote in the FootyEmporium post.

"He is not good with the ball and the majority of his goals are lucky goals. Greatest African players in Premier League are Okocha, Drogba, Kanu, Yaya Toure, Adebayor and Sadio Mane."

Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren came to his friend's defence immediately, with the following comment under the post.

"Clearly he tried some new drinks," wrote Lovren about Yakubu.

It is great to see a former teammate and friend jump to Salah's defence but the thing is, Yakubu's original comment is likely a fake quote.

The reports that claim the comment to be true cite an interview he did with talkSPORT back in February but there is no evidence of the interview online. The other reports have only cited second-hand sources.

In fact Yakubu heaped praise on Salah, back in January, saying: "Salah has won African Footballer of the Year twice. He is just so good. He's still one of the top legends in Africa, not only now but of all-time.

"He's just so consistent for Liverpool and is scoring so many goals. Egypt are strong and they also have many other great players."
