Naby Keita refuses to play for Werder, set to face 'consequences'

Naby Keita refused to play for Werder against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday after learning that he would not be starting the game.

The Bundesliga side's sporting director Clemens Fritz said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano: “Naby Keita found out that he would not be playing vs Leverkusen from the start, he decided not to get on the bus and to go home.

“We'll talk to Keita and his agent about the consequences and how to proceed.”

The midfielder left Liverpool on free transfer last summer and joined Werder. He's made just five Bundesliga appearances there so far, playing a total of 106 minutes. He's had several injuries and viruses, as well the Afcon preventing him from featuring more often.

Yet despite being fit in the past six weeks, Keita played only 26 minutes in six games, including the Leverkusen game in which he refused to play.

Werder ended up losing the game 5-0 as Bayer were crowned Bundesliga champions with another ex-Red Xabi Alonso in charge.
