Who and what United need: January business analysed

What do United need?

An attacking midfielder is a must-buy player for Man United considering the fact that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no other options than Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira for the position.

The Englishman scored 0 goals and made 0 assists in the Premier League in the past 12 months. The Brazilian, meanwhile, is on 1 goal and 3 assists this season so far.

A forward could be on United's agenda too but it's yet unclear if Ole would want to add another striker/winger to his squad amid Mason Greenwood's brilliant form throughout the season.

A pusuit of a central midfielder will depend on potential departures from Old Trafford.

Who are the major targets?

James Maddison is said to be a key target for the Norwegian (The Athletic). Christian Eriksen, who has long been linked with a switch to Old Trafford, could be available on cheap in January (Evening Standard). Jack Grealish has also been linked with the Red Devils lately (The Telegraph).

As for potential additions to United's front line, Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho is believed to be the major target after missing out on Erling Braut Haaland (The Times). Still, the Englishman is unlikely to leave BVB midseason.

Other targets include possible midfielder reinforcements in Declan Rice and Saul Niguez.

Who could be leaving?

Up to six players could leave Man United in 2020 (The Telegraph). This list includes Nemanja Matic, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong.

The latter two are out of their contracts in the summer and United have not given up hope to keep them at Old Trafford. Hence, the Academy graduates are unlikely to leave next month.

Matic and Rojo are the likeliest candidates to be offloaded in January as United have reportedly put the duo up for sale (The Times).
