Martial is back on song. Marcus Rashford, rejuvenated by his heroics for England in the Nations League, looked impressive too. But if there was one problem from the match, it comes in the huge form of Romelu Lukaku. And it is time for Mourinho to drop his talisman.
Lukaku tried against Chelsea but often slowed United’s rapid attack down. He looks tired and short on confidence. And Mourinho may now have to take him out of the firing line following another drab display. Thankfully for him, though, he has an obvious replacement already lined up.
Alexis Sanchez’s United career continues to stagnate. The 29-year-old made it off the bench against Chelsea with just five minutes left. But he deserves a chance to shine down the middle. After all, that was where Sanchez was at his bulldozing best at Arsenal. And it would also allow United to field an attack with the pace to rival their Premier League enemies.
Lukaku remains a great player. But even the best need resting sometimes and Mourinho, if he has the bottle, must make the decision. Whether he does, though, remains to be seen.
