'I’ll never forget how wonderfully Man Utd treated me': Gary Lineker recalls scoring at Old Trafford in final game

Premier League legend Gary Lineker has reminisced about scoring for Tottenham against Manchester United at Old Trafford in what ended up being his last game in English football.

The former striker, who is also England's third-highest goal-scorer, said on Instagram: "Was brought to my attention that my last ever game in English league football was played during this week in 1992.

"I was playing for Spurs at Old Trafford. We lost 3-1, but I’ll never forget how wonderfully Manchester United treated me on that day.

“This beautiful piece of Wedgwood was their gift to me. Also, the lovely ovation from their fans will always stay with me. Brought tears to my eyes.

"A belated thank you, as there was obviously no social media to do that back in the day.”

Lineker played for the likes of Leicester City, Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham before deciding to hang up his boots nearly 28 years ago.

He is only behind Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney when it comes to scoring the maximum number of goals for England. In the 1986 World Cup, he was the proud recipient of the Golden Boot as well.
