Henderson 'wants assurances of No.1 spot' at United before signing long-term deal

Dean Henderson is not going to commit a long-term deal with Man United unless he is guaranteed of definite opportunities.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the goalkeeper is only prepared to agree to a new contract if he is promised the number one spot at Old Trafford. The report suggests that despite growing interest from other clubs, Henderson realizes United won’t sell him amid the possibility of him becoming their first-choice goalkeeper.

The 23-year-old is said to have deliberately signed short-term deals with United so that he can keep his options open and move elsewhere in the future. Henderson reportedly doesn’t want to end up in the same situation as former United keeper Sam Johnstone.

Johnstone had signed a long-term contract with the Red Devils but didn’t make a single appearance for the club, instead embarking on 10 loan spells. He was 25 when he left Old Trafford, but Henderson doesn’t want the same thing happening to him.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has indicated that Henderson will challenge for the No.1 spot at United soon, but after excelling at Sheffield United this season, the 23-year old doesn’t want to wait.

Henderson has kept 11 clean sheets for Sheffield this season, outperforming David De Gea in the league and making a case to replace the Spaniard next season.
