Our current RW options

As things stand, Manchester United have Daniel James, Amad Diallo and Mason Greenwood (who is a natural striker) as options for the right wing.

This season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has played Marcus Rashford [against Istanbul Basaksehir] and Paul Pogba [against Liverpool] there.

Some stats (across competitions):

  • James - 5 goals in 20 appearances
  • Amad - 1 goal in 3 appearances
  • Greenwood - 4 goals in 38 appearances

Possible summer targets

There are never-ending links to Jadon Sancho but at this point, we doubt anyone is even excited by it anymore.

However, there's been a twist to the tale - The Telegraph has reported that the Red Devils are keen on raiding Sporting Lisbon for the talented Pedro Goncalves, who can play on the right wing and has scored 15 goals in 22 Primeira Liga appearances this term.

Are United really signing a new RW?

We have exciting options in Amad and Dan James for the right but when it comes to the No.9 role - or even centre-back - our current set-up could be better.

Edinson Cavani is not fit enough to play regularly in a league as physically demanding as the Premier League and we can all agree on that. Anthony Martial is talented but he's erratic at best and his work rate leaves a lot to be desired.

There's an option in Greenwood, who has impressed in his last couple of displays down the middle but his finishing skills are not quite there yet.

As for the central defence, Harry Maguire has done a brilliant job this season while Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have provided ample support. However, Lindelof can be inconsistent and Bailly's fitness hasn't always been the best.

Our centre-backs are good individually but they do not pair well together on a regular basis - and that's why a new addition to that department wouldn't be a bad idea.

Clearly, there are more pressing areas to address - if we have a striker like Erling Haaland scoring screamers every game and someone solid enough to partner Maguire for the back, the pressure will reduce on James or even Amad to score all the time. As one of our supporters pointed out, wide players do a lot more than just score or assist.

Greenwood - future No.9?

The kid's certainly got the talent to evolve into a dangerous attacker. His movement in the final third has improved but his decision-making and finishing needs work - that's something Ole agrees with too.

The youngster has spoken about his desire to play as No.9 in the future and we should give him that chance. A right-wing role is not Mason's final destination - he can be a lot better as a sole striker.

Greenwood on his preferred position: "I would like to play up front eventually, when I’m older and fill out a bit more, get a bit bigger and stronger.

"It’s a place where I want to play eventually."

What does Ole think?

As quoted by ESPN, when asked about United's future at right wing, Ole replied: "I think when you look at the squad and you look at Amad and you think, yeah, that's probably where we will work to fit you in."

And Amad did not disappoint - his goal against AC Milan in the Europa League was beautiful. The teenager came on as a sub to replace an injured Martial and - boom - hit the ball into the net.

Tribuna.com's verdict

Maybe we need to see Amad play more down the right, with James as competition - it's what works best for everyone. And since there hasn't been much to suggest otherwise, it's highly unlikely we sign a right winger this summer.

If we land a centre-back, a striker - or even a defensive midfielder - this summer, it might make sense to revisit the right wing situation in the January window.
